Fuck Scion

Justin Foley, a very smart guy who plays in the very loud, very good band, The Austerity Program, has politely disassembled some poor reasoning on the part of grindcore outfit, Magrudergrind, who have attempted to rationalize their decision to allow Scion to pay for, release and make free to the public, their new album, Crusher.

My favorite parenthetical moment: "(Also, fuck that guy from Of Montreal who writes jingles for Outback Steakhouse. Just wanted to say that.)"

If you follow the link to Brooklyn Vegan, you can see the album cover has the Scion logo stamped front and center, along with the gross moniker they've given to the department in charge of making kids believe corporations are cool, Scion Audio Visual.

It is not OK to have a corporate sponsor. Say it with me, musicians: IT IS NOT OK TO HAVE A CORPORATE SPONSOR.

  1. Ugh, I'm disgusted to see Arcade Fire on the list. PS: Methinks you need to jazz up your banner some.

  2. I've been liking the starkness of it, but I'm open to suggestions.

  3. Why is having a corporate sponsor so bad? I feel uneasy about it, as you do, but I can't quite articulate why it's so horrible. Is it THAT different from signing with a record label, or having the book you wrote picked up by a publisher? In either case, you're getting paid for your work. I'm not disagreeing with the sentiment of this post--I'm merely looking for a concise, easy-to-swallow answer.

PS: The starkness works, but for a blog about ads, you have so many opportunities to exercise irony, perhaps with some ad-like banner. Maybe not. Just an idea.
